Mom hand pieced many quilts, each about 72" square. She gave an unquilted
quilt top to Mary Frances, David, Lucille, and Nancy. She had pieces cut
for Jack's but did not get to sew them together. I have no idea of what
happened to the pieces, which were in the closet of Mary Anges and Leo's
bedroom in Cannelton when I was in high school. I have a "Trip around the
world" quilt she made that I currently (1995) keep on a quilt rack. I
won't let anyone use it because I don't want it to become more worn. It
is very fragile.
Zoa married (1) Sherley King in 1885/1899. Sherley was born in 1843/1872 in Perry Co., IN. He died before 1901 in Perry
Co., IN.

My Aunt Elizabeth told me that Lenna went to high school in Cannelton and
boarded in Cannelton during the week. She would return to Dexter for the
weekend. Her Grandfather King, who obviously did not like Zoa's marrying
Isaac Spencer (who did built a rather fine, large house for her in
Dexter), would stop the horse and wagon that Lenna was riding in as it
passed his house and have her stay with him for the weekend. How often he
did this I don't know.

After Zoa Belle (Mom) died, Grandpa came to Cannelton to live with us. He
was a great help when Mother (Mary Agnes) had a second bout with
rheumatic fever. He did the washing and ironing and he and Mary Frances
did the cooking. David said it was a chore to eat Mary Frances' biscuits.
David tells of the time he and Grandpa were in the basement and Daddy
came down to complain that his shirt collars were too heavily starched.
Grandpa slowly replied, "Well, Leo, if you don't like the way they are
done I guess you can do a little work around here by doing it yourself."
(And David thought "Go! Grandpa!!!)
One day when Jack was about three and playing happily on the floor,
Grandpa decided to go "over in town" but did not just leave. He announced
to Jack that he was going to do so. Of course, Jack said, "Can I go,
too?" and Grandpa answered, "No, you can't go along" and left. In
consternation, Jack (whose temper tantrums manifested themselves by his
banging his head on the wall) went to the three glass paned front door,
hit his head against one panel and broke the glass!

Caroline Townsend: (NOT Leticia Lynn)
Born in Vermont,
Came to Tenessee as a Schoolteacher. She didn't get along with her
stepmother.
Although we don't believe either Townsend, MA or Lynn, MA is related to
us, the Townsend's landed in Lynn, MA.
Leticia Lynn:
Lynn from Virginia.
Had six children, all sons, three of whom died in infancy
May have come from Lund, Sweden, as part of the viking invasion to
Northern Ireland. (probably apocraphil)
A Lynd, presberian in Northern Ireland rebellioned against the English
(early 19th century) when their property rights revokes, children decared
bastards. Was supposed to be deported to Australia, but got a deal to be
sold as an indentured servant (fixed period) to Virginia - already part
of the U.S. After working off his indentureship, he (name unknown) sent
for his family -- they settled in Tennessee. Name in Virginia changed to
Lynn, because no one could pronounce Lynd.
Letitia married 2 William Orlando White

4 in 1881/1934 in Knoxville (?), Tenn.

Fought in Civil War for the Tennessee Volunteer's (Northern) at about the
age of 17.
He went down the river as a teenager, seeing a slave-market in New
Orleans, and was horrified. Vowed if he could do anything about it, he
would.
Tenessee was a Confederate State.
William heard a bird-call, the call to slip down to the creek, to join
the other volunteers. His mother and sister were having tea with with
good Southern women, and therefore, could not say goodbye to William.
Sister Adelaide discovered that the meeting point was known by the
Conferate Army, and rode down on her horse to warn the boys. The boys
made it out safely.
His sister Ella Adelaide refuged to Reading or Rutland, VT during the
Civil War, to stay with her mother's sisters and brother and attend
school. At school she wrote a remarkable essay (copy exists) about how
she warned the Union Volunteers of the Cleveland reagion (including her
older brother William Orlando White) and thus prevented their capture by
the Confederates.
William was made a Captain of the union army while still a teenager.
William and Grandfather Samuel Tarrant fought against each other at The
Battle of Missionary Ridge. Both survived.
As a perk for doing well during the Civil War, William White was made a
'revenuer' for Tenessee. This was much more dangerous than the war.
I now have his revolver. William White has a gun as well.
Financeer. Dealt in wholesale pharmacuticals and other enterprises.
Fortunes shifted regularly.
It seems unlikely that both he and his future wife were born on the same
day.
