he opposed secession in 1861 but joined his State's movement and enlisted in an artillery company commanded by Capt. Charles BRUCE, serving in North
Carolina and Georgia; State Attorney for Charlotte County, removed to Richmond, 1873, and represented that city in the House of Delegates, 1877-1878,
and the State Senate 1879-1880; was President of the Virginia Historical Society and the American Historical Association; Trustee of the Peabody
Educational Fund; received the Honorary Degree of LL.D., from Washington and Lee University. Author of "Reply to Attack of Thomas JEFFERSON on
