Transcription of notes of Harriet Ann Venable (undated) frompapers of her namesake, Harriet Venable Miller:
"Just before the Civil war began Henry Watkins Edmunds joinedthe military company and was elected corporal. First fight gotinto he was wounded, captured and parolled. Came home and wentto courting. Got engaged to Harriet Ann Venable. He was youngand strong and vigorous and thought he could take care of a wifeall right, but a short time after this engagement he wasexchanged and volunteered the second time and joined a cavalryco. 3rd VA Cavalry, Fitz. Lee's Brigade, J.E.B. Stuart'sdivision, and was severely wounded at Kelly's Ford, CulpepperCo., VA, and returned home. His father sent for Dr. Mettener, anoted surgeon who when he saw him, said it would take severalyears for his wound to heal (it took six years to heal). Healso said that unless he had pnewmonia or pleurisy his woundwould not shorten his days, but that he would always be shortwinded and never able to do continuous hard work.
He then wrote to his sweetheart, Hattie Venable and told herwhat the doctor had said and telling her as he could not ask herto sacrifice her life to the helpless cripple that he was, feltthat he would not be able to take care of her, that he wouldmake no complaint if she should cancel the engagement betweenthem. She replied at once that the engagement should not bebroken and if he could not take care of her she coud and wouldtake care of him, which she did for 59 years.
In 1914 we celebrated our Golden Wedding and John D. Rockefellow(sic) celebrated his the same day and I feel that I have left mychildren with a better legacy by having such a mother and herexample and precept than if I had had all of John D.'s wealth toleave them."
