Some Descendants of "Dr." John Woodson

Eleventh Generation

(Continued)

4445. Steven Brent McGhee (Davis Martin McGhee , Laura Augusta Haden , Walter Payne Haden , Samuel Hopkins Haden , Susannah Woodson Payne , George Payne , Josias Payne , Mary Woodson , Robert , John ).

He had the following children:

  5564 M i Michael McGhee.

4452. Harold Herndon Cleveland (Julia Emmory Otey , Mary Emma Herndon , Archilaus Mitchell Herndon , Ann Reed Perkins , Ann Mitchell , Agnes Payne , Josias Payne , Mary Woodson , Robert , John ) was born on 18 Dec 1895 in Hale, MO. He died on 16 Jun 1943 in Burlington, IA.

As reported by his son Harold W.:
Following his graduation from the Hale MO High School, Harold enrolled in the Chillicothe Business College - an advanced educational move for his time and place. After graduation, he was employed by the Brown Shoe Factory in Brookfield, MO. While in Brookfield he married Elaine Julia Irvin of Chillicothe, MO ca Fall or Winter of 1916-17. He was inducted into the army at Linneas, MO October 3rd, 1917 as part of the 3rd division of the first draft. He served in France with the AEF, first as a Field Clerk, but was promoted to the rank of Battalion Sergeant Major of company "C", Headquarters Battalion, GHQ, in France on the 20th of February, 1919. He was proud of the fact that he was for a time personal chauffeur to General "Black Jack" Pershing. His service number was: 2311903. He once told about standing in line in France for his turn to ride in an "aeroplane" a new and daring form of transportation in those days. As the aircraft was trying to land, the pilot lost control and it crashed and burned, killing both the pilot and his passenger. As he put it, I (his son) came that close to never being born; had he been one person sooner in the line, he would have been the one killed.

After the war (WWI) he was employed as a shipping clerk by the Burlington Railroad, until ca 1930 when he passed the required state board examination, and became one of the first male beauticians in MO (if not the first).

After my mother's death he continued operating the shop. Ca Fall of 1936 he married my mother's last apprentice, Susan Maples, who had stayed on to help.

At the onset of WWII they moved to Burlington, Iowa where Susie continued to operate the shop while he went back to the railroad as an "IOP division clerk". In Burlington, they resided at 2617 Columbia St, Flint Hills Manor.

He suffered a fatal heart attack over his lunch while at work on June 16, 1943. He was rarely ill, not even susceptable to the common cold.

Harold married (1) Elaine Julia Irvin in 1916 in Chilicothe, MO. Elaine was born on 17 Apr 1892 in Chilicothe, MO. She died on 13 Jan 1935.

According to her son Harold W. Cleveland:
I recall seeing pictures of her taken during WWI in a nurses uniform, and I seem to remember hearing that she had served as an ambulance driver - an unusual ocupation for a woman in those times. I find it believable because she was a very strong-minded person who was successful at anything she tried. She played piano "by ear", and was a pretty fair sketch artist.

To me, she seemed a big boned woman, but not fat - although she seemed to be constantly fighting a tendency toward over-weight. Other sources however describe her variously as being a small person with intense blue eyes; and a slender, vivacious person with black hair. (I recall her normal hair color being auburn, but she kept it dyed black because she felt, for some reason, that it was more appropriate in her profession.)

She had a fiery temper, but could be extremely charming. It was this latter attribute that made her so successful as a Beautician - women seemed drawn to her and her clientel ranged from the upper echlons of Hannibal (Mo) society to the local "Ladies of the Night". She was friend and confidant to them all, and by all reports well loved by her family.

An example of her open-mindedness was revealed by her reaction to her brother Oney's way of life; she disapproved of his life as a "bum" but admired him for living as he preferred - despite criticism from his family.

She was licensed by the state as an Beauty Culture Instructor and always had an apprentice or two helping in the "Salon" as she called it.

In 1933 she was diagnosed as suffering from colon cancer (a term not then used in polite society!) and after an extended period of illness and two major surgeries, she went into a coma in January of 1935, and on the 13th she died.

Harold and Elaine had the following children:

+ 5565 M i Harold William Cleveland was born Private.

Harold married (2) Susanne Maple on 6 Nov 1936 in Centralia, MO. Susanne was born in 1918. She died in 1991.

They had the following children:

4453. Vera Cleveland (Julia Emmory Otey , Mary Emma Herndon , Archilaus Mitchell Herndon , Ann Reed Perkins , Ann Mitchell , Agnes Payne , Josias Payne , Mary Woodson , Robert , John ) was born 1 on 25 Sep 1900 in KS. She died 2 in Jun 1984 in Anaheim, Orange Co., CA.

As reported by her daughter Barbara Schweppe Hanes:
Mother and Harold (her brother) grew up in Hale (Mo) after moving to the new house in town in 1910. The two seemed very close and she was so proud of him when he went to WWI. Mother was very athletic and beautiful according to her pictures. She graduated from high school when she was 16 and went to Chillicothe Business College. Though always mad because she didn't have a college degree, her education paid off for her.

After graduation, she answered an ad from a lawyer in Tribute, KS and went west for her fortune. What she found besides a position that she loved as legal secretary, was a high school football coach and teacher. (John Schweppe)

They were married in 1922 and moved to Deming NM. Mother worked for the State until Kay (John Kerwin) was born in 1925. In 1927 they moved to Alamogordo, where daddy was high school principal. They returned to MO every summer to visit relatives. We moved back to Hale after the death of grandmother (Julia Otey Cleveland) in the early 30's.

In 1936 we moved to Parsons KS where we lived until 1943. Mother worked at a bank in Parsons and loved it. She did not work in Fort Scott until daddy died in 1949. She then went to work as the superintendent of schools secretary until 1952 when she became City Clerk where she remained until she retired in 1975.

She taught classes on City Clerk-ship at KU each year and was well regarded - was in Whose Who of American Women.

She began to be comfortable in retirement but had a stroke one year later. After some nine months of intensive care she was well enough to return to Fort Scott and live 9 more years until she died on my 50th birthday. (1984)

End of Hanes report.

A note by her nephew Harold W. Cleveland:
I regret that I had little contact with aunt Vera. What little time I had in her company was memorable; she was kind and generous and was, in my opinion, a strikingly handsome woman - I always thought of her as my "beautiful aunt".

Vera married John Schweppe in 1911/1944. John was born in 1880/1900. He died in 1949.

As reported by his daughter Barbara S. Hanes:
Daddy was from Reger MO, the youngest of 8 children. His parents knew very little English and spoke mostly German. The children were bright and schooling was a serious matter. He got a bachelor's degree in Cameron Mo., and a Masters from Iowa Wesleyian.

He was a high school football coach and teacher when he met mother in Tribute KS. In 1922 he and mother were married, and he accepted a job in Deming NM. He was in the National Guard Cavelry.

In 1927 they moved to Alamogordo (N.M.) where he became high school principal.

About 1930 they moved back to Hale (Mo) where he became a collector for equipment purchased by farmers. Later, he became a "blockman" selling International Harvester equipment to dealers throughout MO.

In 1936 we moved to Parsons KS where he had a larger territory for IH. During the war he worked for the Government teaching Mexicans how to farm sugar beets - he spoke Mexican.

After the war he and a friend bought the International Harvester dealership in Fort Scott which he ran until his death from a heart attack in 1949.
