Their blood has come down to our day in veins of the Royal houses of England of Plantagenet, Tudor, Stuart and Guelph. When Robert Nevill died this Ranulph was still in his minority and obtained liberty of the king that his friends might plow and manage his lands, and in 13th of Edward I, 1285, had liberty of certain manor, part of his inheritance. He was summoned to Parliament as a Baron 8 June, 1294, and from that period to 18 Feb., 1331. His lordship was in the wars of France in time of Edward II. Conflict here:

In Burke's Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage books it states that Roger was "b. 21 Jan or 2 Feb. 1299/1300; joined rebellion of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, against Edward II and his favorites and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Boroughridge 16 March 1321/2: dsp, being executed at York 23 March 1322."

From this site:
Roger Clifford, 2nd Lord of Skipton

He was involved in a rebellion against King Edward I's favourite Huge Lord de Despencer, and ultimately against the King him self. The rebel forces were brought to battle by the King's forces in Boroughbridge in March 1322 at which Roger Clifford received severe wounds. Forced to surrender, he was condemned to death and held captive in York. Reprieved, probably because of his wounds, he survived until 1326. His estates were forfeited, including Skipton castle. They were restored to Robert, 3rd Lord of Skipton in 1327.

The Battle of Boroughbridge was a small but important battle in the conflicts between Edward II of England and his rebellious barons. The battle took place near at important bridge across the Wye called Boroughbridge, northwest of York.

Early in 1322, King Edward took forces north in England to subdue his cousin Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. Lancaster was pushed further north, where he may have been hoping to join up with forces from Scotland. However on March 16, he found his way across the river Wye barred by forces of Sir Andrew Harclay. Sir Andrew used the infantry tactics which were later to prove so effective against the French at Crecy, and the rebels were defeated.

Of the rebel leaders, Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford, was killed, and the rest captured. The prisoners were later convicted of treason and executed.

Edward was the first Prince of Wales. The Welsh after their defeat, complained that they wanted a prince who could speak Welsh. Edward I promised them that he would invest one "who could speak no other".... indeed Edward II was but a child who could not yet speak. This apparently remains a sore point between the English and Welsh even  today.

As a youth, Edward was extravagant and incompetent and kept unsavoury friends, he was probably homosocial. He was considered a weak king, liking athletic sports, like rowing as well as theatricals and manual crafts. Crowned on the 25th February 1308, Edward as a result of his perceived unsavoury lifestyle, the 'Lords Ordainers', a committeee of 21 led by Henry Plantagenet, Earl of Lincoln, was established and drew up 41 articles known as the Ordinances of 1311 to try to control the king.  By April 1308 parliament had met and forced Edward to agree to their wishes. Gaveston was sent to Ireland, Edward seeing him off at Bristol. Gaveston had been made a ward of Roger Mortimer in 1303 during the Welsh Wars, Gaveston's father having been a close compatriot of Edward I. Mortimer would have been all too aware of Gaveston's wayward influence on Edward. Edward became unpopular with the barons and in 1310 the aristocracy revolted against him.  In 1309 Edward agreed to reforms but managed to achieve the return of Gaveston.

Defeated by Robert de Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314 Edward placed England under baronial control.
