THE TWENTY SHERIFFS OF OLD TUOLUMNE
By CARLO M. DE FERRARI
. . .
David F. Baxter, another old pioneer, brought the office back to the Democratic fold by defeating Trout at the election of 1873. He held the office for two terms, and in turn was defeated by Tryon M. "Pre" Yancey in the election of 1877.

Yancey had commenced his career in Tuolumne County as a partner of John C. Duchow in the Columbia Gazette, and was by profession a printer. Later he was also associated for many years with the Union Democrat. He retired in favor of his son-in-law, George McQuade, after a stormy tenure in office in which he was bitterly opposed by his former newspaper partner, John C. Duchow, who was now the proprietor of the Tuolumne Independent. Following McQuade's death in 1889, Yancey again began to take an active interest in politics and succeeded once more in winning the office of sheriff at the election of 1892. He was re-elected for four years in 1894, but died in office on January 12, 1898 before the end of his term.

Biography Excerpts of 1882 of Central Linn County, MO, p. 461; Bardsell &Dean, 1882

The history of the Perkins family as elsewhere given is complete, except that part personal to the scion whose name heads this sketch.

Dr. Patrick Henry Perkins (called Park in the family) is a son of the Rev. William Perkins mentioned in the biography of Dr. E. F. Perkins. He is a brother of the latter, and consequently a great-great grandson of the illustrious Patrick Henry, of Virginia. He (Dr. Perkins) was born in Henry county, Virginia, on the twenty-second of January, 1829. When he was about eight years old his father, in 1837, moved with his family to MO, settling in Howard county, and there Dr. Park was reared and educated, receiving the greater part of his literary education at Glasgow. His professional education was acquired at the McDowell Medical College in St. Louis, attending lectures there in 1853?54. He read medicine with Dr. Vaughn, of Glasgow, and Dr. Graves, of Brunswick, for two years before entering McDowell College. Dr. Perkins first began the practice in Grundy county, in 1855, and remained one year. From there he moved to DeWitt, in Carroll county, where he practiced for nine years. Illinois was his next field of operations, going there in 1864, to escape the war troubles of MO. Locating at Camp Point he remained in the practice one year and then returned to MO and located at Linneus, Linn county, in October, 1865. Since that date Dr. Perkins has been constantly in the practice here, and most of the time in the drug business, having begun the latter in 1873.

Dr. Perkins was first married in March, 1857, to Miss Mary Jane Guthrie, daughter of the Rev. Eli Guthrie, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, who was drowned in the MO River near DeWitt. Dr. Perkins's wife died in March, 1865, and he was again married in April of the following year to Miss Mattie Flood, daughter of Judge John Flood, an old settler of this county, and once judge of one of the Chariton County Courts. This lady is still living at this writing. He had four children by his first marriage, three sons and one daughter, one son and one daughter still living. By his second marriage Dr. Perkins has had four children, two of each sex, and all living.

Dr. Perkins and wife belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church South, behaving been a member for twenty-three years. He also belongs to the Masonic order, the Good Templars, and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, and has filled many offices. He was elected mayor of Linneus in April, 1881, on the straight-out temperance ticket, he having always been a great temperance advocate.

Politically, Dr. Perkins is a Democrat, and was a Southern sympathizer during the war. In 1849 he went with the gold excitement to California, and was engaged in mining and cattle trading for two years. He returned in 1851. He made money there.

The Perkins family have in their possession a letter written by the great Patrick Henry, of Virginia, which they preserve as an heirloom and souvenir. It bears date July 4, 1794, and is addressed to his daughter as "My Dear Patsy." It is a business letter written in regard to some land transaction. It was our intention to publish the letter, but being unable to make out some words and names we are forced to forego

He was a Physician and practiced in Milan, Sullivan Co. and later in Linneus, Mo. He served as State Senator and later became a merchant. There is an account of him in the History of Linn Co., Mo. By his first wife he had seven children and by his second wife he had one daughter

Biography Excerpts of 1882 of Central Linn County, MO, p. 461; Bardsell & Dean, 1882.

This gentleman, who has had political and official connection with Linn county since his residence here, is a native of the "Old Dominion," and was born in Henry county, Virginia, on the thirteenth of September, 1833. He is the son of the Rev. William Perkins, formally a minister in the M.E. Church South, and also a native of Virginia, and who died in Linneus in 1871. Dr. Perkins's mother was Martha Henry Fontaine, a family of French Huguenot extraction, the original name being De La Fontaine, and a name prominent among the early Huguenots of the Carolinas. She was a great granddaughter of the illustrious Patrick Henry, of Virginia, and reared by her grandmother, the eldest daughter of that master statesman. On the paternal side the Perkins family is of Scotch-Irish origin, and was here prior to the Revolution, the doctor's grandfather having been a major in that struggle for independence.

When our subject was about five years old his father moved from Virginia to Howard county, Missouri, near Glasgow, and there Edward resided till 1854. His general education was acquired chiefly in Howard county, and his professional education was obtained partly at Glasgow in the office of Dr. Isaac Vaughn (with whom he read over a year) and at McDowell Medical college in St. Louis, which he attended during the years 1854-55. Dr. Perkins first began the practice in the spring of 1855, at Milan, Sullivan county, MO. His only family consisted of himself and his horse, and he began life with a cash capital of eight dollars all told, less seventy-five dollars of indebtedness incurred for outfit. He at once got into a lucrative practice and remained at Milan nine years. He then moved to Linneus in 1864 and began the practice, and soon afterward went into the drug business with John Bradley, his brother-in-law. Dr. Perkins soon bought Bradley out and conducted the business alone till 1873 when he closed out. During the campaign of 1874 he was brought out by his Democratic friends as candidate for State Senator of the Sixth Senatorial District of MO, and received the nomination when the convention met at Linneus over several other popular gentlemen. The Republicans brought out E. A. Holcomb, of Keytesville, as his competitor. Dr. Perkins was duly elected at the ensuing election and served one term of four years. His health was not good during this period, and he laid politics aside at the expiration of his term engaging in the mercantile business at Linneus and has been thus engaged ever since. Though not regularly in the practice any more, he occasionally attends his own personal friends in sickness.

Dr. Perkins was first married in the spring of 1859 to Miss Jennie T. Garrett, of Linn county. She died in August, 1874 and he was again married in December, 1878, to Mrs. Kate Moore, a daughter of the Rev. L.T. McNeally, of the M. E. Church. Seven children were born of the first marriage (three now living), and one, a daughter, of the second.

Dr. Perkins is a member of the M. E. Church South, and has been for sixteen years. His first wife was a member of the Christian Church, and the present Mrs. P. belongs to the Southern Methodist. Dr. Perkins has taken all the degrees of Oddfellowship, and as far at Fellow-Craft in Masonry.

Though having no capital to begin life Dr. Perkins has, by energy, industry, and thrifty management, amassed a fair competency, and is enabled to surround his family with all the comforts of life.

THE DAILY APPEAL MARYSVILLE CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 23, 1905

REMAINS OF MRS. HOUSH ARRIVE
Death Believed to Have Resulted From Dropsy of the Heart

The remains of the late Mrs. George P. Housh, a pioneer resident of Yuba county, who died rather suddenly on Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Turner at Broderick, Yolo county, arrived last evening at the undertaking parlors of J. K. Kelly.

The deceased was a native of Illinois and was aged 65 years and 3 months. She was the daughter of James Evans, who resides at Brownsville, and who is over 90 years of age.

The deceased, who was Catherine Evans, came to California in 1852 and married Geo. P. Housh. One son, Thomas J. Housh, and four daughters, Mrs. W. E. Turner, of Broderick, Mrs. William Nelson [correction: Wilson] of San Francisco; Mrs. George Osland of Broderick, and Mrs. Henry Clemons of Challenge, live to mourn her demise.

The Housh family are well known in the vicinity of the Oregon House, Indiana Ranch, Browns Valley, and Marysville. The deceased was the sister of "Doc" Evans of Gridley, the well known stockman, of Frank P. Evans of Frenchtown, of Mrs. Richter of Gridley, and of Mrs. Shattuck of Port Townsend, Washington, and Mrs. J. A. Broyles of Chico. The husband of the deceased conducted the Oregon House for a number of years, and then sold out to Mrs. Sarah Phelan and moved to Browns Valley. He ran a daily stage to Browns Valley for several years.

The deceased was a generous and warm hearted woman, who had a large circle of friends and acquaintances in Yuba county, by all of whom she was loved and much respected.

Her daughter, Mrs. Turner, stated that death had resulted, she had no doubt, from dropsy of the heart.

The internment will take place in the family plot in the Indiana Ranch cemetery at 11 o'clock this forenoon by the side of her husband.

The Journey of Benjamin Franklin “Berry” Ledbetter - by Bob Juch

Benjamin was born in North Carolina about 1815, probably in the hills of Morgan Township in north central Rutherford County where his father, Laban, was counted in the 1800 and 1910 censuses.

His mother, Priscilla Earle Ledbetter, appears on the 1830 Census of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri with one male 10-14 and one male 15-19.  One is probably Benjamin.  She must be the female 50-59.  What happened to Laban, and where, is not known.  Below her entry are Ransom Ledbetter and Jarret Ledbetter.  Ransom is shown with one male 20-29, one male 30-39, one female under 5, and one female 20-29.  The younger male might be a brother.  Jarret is shown with one male 20-29, two females under 5, and one female 20-29.

Benjamin next is shown as Berry on the 1840 Census of Jackson County, Alabama.  He's shown with one male under 5, one female 30-39, and one female 60-69. The older female is probably his mother, but the younger female and boy do not fit what is known of his wife and children.  Possibly they are the wife and child of one of his brothers.

Pleasant Ledbetter is shown on the same page with one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 30-39, two females under 5, one female 5-9, and one female 20-29.  Those ages fit perfectly this family of James Pleasant Ledbetter who went by Pleasant.  He is the older brother of Berry.  The birth places and dates of his children show that he went from North Carolina to Missouri before 1832 then to Alabama by 1833.  Pleasant had two land clams in 1837 and 1838 of the northeast and southwest quarters of the southwest quarter of section 3S 7E 14.  He was probably living there in 1840.

In 1850 Berry is back in Missouri, in Wayne County, about 30 miles west of Cape Girardeau County.  His wife, Mary A., and daughters Alabama and Virginia are shown with him on the Census.

He is not found on the 1860 Census.

The 1870 Census shows him in Butte County, California with his wife and children. As his daughter, Alabama, had a child there in 1862, and Virginia was married there in 1865, he must have been in Butte County by 1862.  His youngest child, Samuel, was listed as being born in Alabama about 1861, but as Benjamin later claimed he was born in Butte County in 1857, that may not be correct.

63. Mary A. "Polly" was born 1 27 Jan 1823 in Tennessee. She died 1 15 Jun 1904 in Gridley, Butte Co., CA and was buried 1 17 Jun 1904 in Gridley, Butte Co., CA.

GEORGE WASHINGTON LEDBETTER PIONEER GRIDLEYAN SUMMONED

Final rites will be held from the Block Funeral Home at one o'clock this afternoon for Geo. Washington Ledbetter, San Francisco, resident the past nine years and prior to that time a resident of Gridley for more than 60 years, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mae Heffernan, in San Francisco Sunday morning following an illness of two weeks.

The remains were accompanied to Gridley yesterday by Mrs. Heffernan, the Block Funeral Home taking charge here. Services will be held from the Block chapel Rev. R. A. Moon officiating and interment will be made in the Gridley-Biggs cemetery. Selections will be sung by Mrs. W. H. Block.

Mr. Ledbetter was a native of the state of Missouri and was 84 years of age last April. Mr. Ledbetter was the last member of the Ledbetter family, one of the pioneer families of the communities, members of which were the late Mrs. Virginia Evans, Miss Nancy Ledbetter, Frank Ledbetter, Mrs. Alabama Davis and Mrs. Tennessee Murphy. Mr. Ledbetter had enjoyed exceptionally good health throughout his lifetime of 84 years, his final illness believed to be the only serious illness he ever experienced. The Ledbetter family first came to Gridley when George Washington Ledbetter was but a small boy, the father taking up some land southeast of the present City of Gridley. At that time the Gridley community was an uncleared area of live oak and manzanita. The family then left Gridley for several years during which time they lived in Texas.

The deceased is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Heffernan and Mrs. Hattie Mitchell of Birmingham, Alabama, and son, W. E. Bradley of San Francisco. Frank Davis of Gridley and Fred Davis of Oakland are nephews and Roy Cunningham of San Francisco and Harold Evans of Chico are grandsons.

Coincident with the interment of Mr. Ledbetter, the ashes of Geo. Bradley, a son of the deceased who was drowned some two months ago in a lake near Seattle, will be placed in an adjoining grave.
