PROMINENT CITIZEN DIES SUDDENLY
J. A. Evans, of this place, one of the best known cattle men in
Northern California, and a prominent business man in the vicinity for
forty years, was found dead in his bed this morning by Supervisor C. H.
Brown, who resides with the Evans family. Mr. Brown had gone to the barn
to milk, and noticing that Mr. Evans had not gotten up he went to his
room to see him, Mr. Evans having been somewhat unwell for a few weeks,
and found the latter dead. The body was cold and it was evident that
death had occurred early in the night.
J. A. Evans was a native of Illinois, and would have been 70 years
old had he lived until his next birthday. He came to California about
1852, while a young boy, with his father and they settled in Yuba
county. Since the sixties he has been engaged in farming near Gridley,
and in company with John Bogles conducted extensive grain farming
operation. In the 80's the firm failed for a large amount, losing
heavily by the collapse of a warehouse filled with grain, the wheat
getting wet. Afterward Mr. Evans formed a co-partnership with M. Reyman
and went into cattle feeding extensively on the Ord ranch. He
accumulated a large fortune in this industry and at the time of his
death, the firm, Reyman, Evans & Brown, were heavily interested in
cattle, horses and mules. Supervisor Brown, who is a son-in-law of the
deceased, is the third member of the firm.
Familiarly and widely known by the nickname of "Doc" Mr.
Evans has been a feature of the business life of this community for half
a century. His firm often made deals in cattle involving the payment of
large sums of money, running to $100,000 at times. Though plain in his
tastes and unpretentious, Mr. Evans was charitable and large of heart.
Many benefactions were made by him and many a poor family was helped
over tight times by his generosity. His familiar figure on the streets
and driving to and from the Ord ranch will be missed by old and young.
The funeral will occur Monday, November 30, at 2 o'clock p. m., from
Masonic hall, Gridley, under the auspices of North Butte Lodge No. 230,
F. & A. M.

GEORGE WASHINGTON LEDBETTER PIONEER GRIDLEYAN SUMMONED
Final rites will be held from the Block Funeral Home at one o'clock
this afternoon for Geo. Washington Ledbetter, San Francisco, resident
the past nine years and prior to that time a resident of Gridley for
more than 60 years, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mae
Heffernan, in San Francisco Sunday morning following an illness of two
weeks.
The remains were accompanied to Gridley yesterday by Mrs. Heffernan,
the Block Funeral Home taking charge here. Services will be held from
the Block chapel Rev. R. A. Moon officiating and interment will be made
in the Gridley-Biggs cemetery. Selections will be sung by Mrs. W. H.
Block.
Mr. Ledbetter was a native of the state of MO and was 84 years of age
last April. Mr. Ledbetter was the last member of the Ledbetter family,
one of the pioneer families of the communities, members of which were
the late Mrs. Virginia Evans, Miss Nancy Ledbetter, Frank Ledbetter,
Mrs. Alabama Davis and Mrs. Tennessee Murphy. Mr. Ledbetter had enjoyed
exceptionally good health throughout his lifetime of 84 years, his final
illness believed to be the only serious illness he ever experienced. The
Ledbetter family first came to Gridley when George Washington Ledbetter
was but a small boy, the father taking up some land southeast of the
present City of Gridley. At that time the Gridley community was an
uncleared area of live oak and manzanita. The family then left Gridley
for several years during which time they lived in Texas.
The deceased is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Heffernan and
Mrs. Hattie Mitchell of Birmingham, Alabama, and son, W. E. Bradley of
San Francisco. Frank Davis of Gridley and Fred Davis of Oakland are
nephews and Roy Cunningham of San Francisco and Harold Evans of Chico
are grandsons.
Coincident with the interment of Mr. Ledbetter, the ashes of Geo.
Bradley, a son of the deceased who was drowned some two months ago in a
lake near Seattle, will be placed in an adjoining grave.
George married 1 (1) Belle
Haddock, daughter of Haddock, on 28 Jul 1878 in Butte Co., CA. Belle
was born about 1861 in CA.
They had the following children:
